CIVILTECH QUALITY CONTROL LAB PRIVATE LIMITED conducts the Standard Penetration Test (SPT) as per IS 2131 to evaluate the geotechnical properties of soil. SPT is an in-situ dynamic penetration test that provides both soil samples for identification and penetration resistance values (“N” values), which are essential for geotechnical engineering design and foundation analysis.
The test is especially useful for determining the relative density of cohesionless soils and the consistency of cohesive soils. A split-barrel sampler is driven into the soil by a 63.5 kg weight falling through 75 cm height. After an initial penetration of 15 cm, the number of blows required to drive the sampler an additional 30 cm is recorded as the N-value.
Each SPT sample is carefully retrieved from the split-barrel sampler and inspected for visual identification of soil strata. Samples are preserved in numbered polythene bags for proper identification and laboratory evaluation. The N-values are then correlated with engineering properties of soils using widely accepted local and international standards.
